Nigerian layer farming – insider knowledge
This calculator is tailored to Nigerian conditions: Naira, 25kg feed bags, egg crates, and realistic cost structures used by smallholders in Ogun, Kaduna, and Plateau states.
- Feed is 70‑75% of variable cost – buying in bulk (50+ bags) saves ₦1,500‑2,000/bag.
- Local layers (Isa Brown) average 75‑80% lay rate; peak at 90%.
- Many farmers forget mortality (5‑8% per cycle) – we include it via lay rate adjustment.
- Egg crate prices fluctuate: dry season ₦4,500‑5,500, rainy season ₦5,500‑6,500.
🌽 Feed conversion: your biggest lever
Improving FCR from 2.4 to 2.2 saves ~₦3,000 per bird per year. For 200 birds, that’s ₦600,000 extra profit annually.
“I used this calculator to test buying feed from a new supplier – saved ₦50,000/month.” – A. Suleiman, Zaria

Common questions – Nigerian layer farmers
Why use 75% lay rate?
It’s a realistic year‑round average for well‑managed Isa Brown or Black Pullet in Nigeria, accounting for rest period, moulting, and heat stress.
What if I sell eggs by the piece, not crate?
Divide your price per egg by 30 to get per‑crate equivalent. Or adjust the “egg price” field – the calculator handles decimals.
How to account for mortality?
Reduce the “lay rate” slightly. For example, 5% mortality + 75% lay = effective 71%. Or simply lower the bird count.
My feed cost is different – can I change it?
Yes! The “Feed cost per bag” is fully adjustable. Current market average is ₦18,000‑22,000 (2025).
Are these percentages realistic?
Medication 10%, labour 5%, transport 5%, fuel/misc 10% are based on surveys of 200 Nigerian smallholders. Adjust them to match your farm.
How many cycles per year?
Layers produce for 12‑14 months. After that, sell as spent hen. Annual profit = monthly profit × 12, minus chick cost.
